West Hollywood to Enforce New Speed Limits for Safer Streets
In a valiant effort to make city streets safer for all, West Hollywood has announced a significant reduction in speed limits across 28 street segments. This strategic move is part of the city’s WeHo Target Vision Zero Action Plan, which ambitiously aims to eliminate severe and fatal crashes.
A New Speed Landscape
The new speed regulations will see reductions on major corridors to 30 mph, commercial streets to 25 mph, and particularly narrow residential lanes down to an idyllic 20 mph. This change is not merely about lowering numbers; it represents a heartening commitment to preserving lives and creating a harmonious urban experience.
Legislative Support
Enabled by Assembly Bill (AB) 43, this initiative gives local authorities the necessary tools to tailor speed limits to the unique context of each street, providing a more sensible and protective traffic environment.
Community Focused Implementation
West Hollywood’s city council, after a detailed assessment by a traffic engineering consulting firm, has embraced recommendations to classify roads as Safety Corridors and High Pedestrian and Bicycle Activity Zones. The approval of this plan was a significant stride taken during a city meeting on January 21, 2025.
Future Vision and Community Support
Additional speed reductions were also sanctioned during the city’s July council meeting. The community, now more engaged and informed, looks forward to a safer West Hollywood with these thoughtful enhancements backed by legislative updates.
